5 Hoverboard Safety Tips

Hoverboards can be quite fun and exciting but it is quite common for them to get damaged or even explode. Here are five tips you should definitely apply to make sure that you and your hoverboard both stay safe.

So What to look for when purchasing a hoverboard? And How to use hoverboard properly?

  1. Always buy UL 2272 Certified hoverboards

United Laboratories (UL) has created a quality assurance standard by which the quality and safety of hoverboards are controlled. This standard is known as the UL 2272 standard for hoverboards. This standard includes more than 150 different safety and quality tests before the product is packaged and sent to stored. Some of these tests include mold stress test, drop test, shock test, crash test, short circuit test, motor overload test, imbalanced charging test, and exposure test. Make sure when you buy a hoverboard from the market for the first time, the hoverboard is UL 2272 certified. Do not buy a hoverboard that isn’t UL 2272 certified.

  1. Stay away from improper charging habits

One of the most common reasons why hover boards get damaged, stop working, malfunction, or even catch fire is charging beyond the specified time or charging the hoverboard beyond its battery capacity. Make sure that you don’t overcharge your battery. Never leave your hoverboard plugged in for the night. It will most definitely explode that way.

Newer hover boards come with overcharge protector built in. But older models don’t come with this feature pre-installed.

  1. Learn your way

There is a learning curve when it comes to hoverboarding. Do not expect to be trick shotting your way up and down the street the minute you get your hoverboard. Beginners should learn how to hoverboard first. There are different levels of hoverboarding. Beginners should go slow and learn their way. Practice makes perfect. Also, beginners should wear protective gear to ensure that they don’t injure themselves.

  1. Only ride where you should be

DO NOT hoverboard in someone else’s property. Do not hoverboard in the middle of the road with busy traffic. Find out if your hoverboard is street legal before you take it out. Consult the local police department on rules of how you should be handling your hoverboard in the street. Most countries allow hover boards on pavements but it is still important for you to find out if your local area allows it or not.

  1. Do not go beyond the limits of your hoverboard

It is very important for you to understand the safety guidelines of your hoverboard. Do not hoverboard over the rough or wet terrain. Do not hoverboard over uneven surfaces. Hoverboards aren’t designed to go off ramps or grind over rails like skateboards. On top of that, they can get easily damaged by strong impacts. The battery and the gyroscope are two of the most vulnerable parts of the hoverboard so make sure that you exercise safety and do not take the hoverboard beyond its limits.
